How Do I Update My NDIS Plan When My Circumstances Change?
- April 21, 2025
Life doesn’t always go according to plan — and that’s okay. Maybe you’ve moved house, changed jobs, or your needs just look a little different now than they did a few months ago. If you’re wondering whether your NDIS plan still works for you, you’re not alone.
At Concept Care, we speak with many people who feel unsure about what to do when things change. The good news? You can update your NDIS plan — and we’re here to walk you through it, step by step.
First Things First: When Should I Update My Plan?
The NDIS is designed to support you as you are — including when life changes.
You might want to update your plan if:
- You’ve moved to a new home or area
- You need more (or different) types of support
- Your health or mobility has changed
- Someone who used to support you is no longer able to
- You’ve set new goals (maybe you want to study, travel, or become more independent!)
If any of these sound familiar, it’s a good idea to check in with your plan.
So, What Are My Options?
The NDIS offers two main ways to update your plan when your circumstances change:
- Plan Variation (Quick Fixes)
Think of this like a small adjustment. If you just need to update your address or make a minor change to your supports, a plan variation could be the simplest option.
- Plan Reassessment (Bigger Changes)
This is more like a full refresh. If your needs have changed significantly, or your current plan isn’t meeting your goals, you can request a full plan reassessment.
Good to know:
You can request these changes yourself or your NDIS representative — such as your Support Coordinator, Local Area Coordinator (LAC), or plan nominee — can help guide you through the process.
How Do I Request a Plan Update?
Here’s how to get started:
Step 1: Let the NDIS Know
Call the NDIS on 1800 800 110, or speak with your LAC, Support Coordinator, or plan nominee. Let them know what’s changed and that you’d like to update your plan.
Step 2: Complete a ‘Change of Circumstances’ Form
This helps put everything in writing. You’ll explain what’s changed and how it’s affecting you.
Step 3: Gather Supporting Information
This could include:
- A letter or report from your GP, OT, psychologist, or another allied health professional
- Notes from your support worker or family
- A personal statement explaining your changes
(And don’t worry — if you’re unsure what’s needed, we’re here to help you figure it out!)
Step 4: Wait for a Response
Once your request is submitted, the NDIA will review your situation. They may adjust your plan with a variation or proceed with a full reassessment. Sometimes they might invite you to a meeting to discuss your needs in more detail.
