What’s NAIDOC Week All About – and Why Should You Come Along?

If you’ve ever wondered what NAIDOC Week is really about, or if you’ve seen community events popping up and thought, “That looks interesting, but I’m not sure if it’s for me,” — you’re not alone.

The good news? It is for you. And it’s for all of us.

Whether you’re curious, want to learn more, or simply want to be part of something uplifting and meaningful — NAIDOC Week is a beautiful opportunity to connect with culture, community and each other.

So, what is NAIDOC Week?

NAIDOC Week is a time when people across Australia come together to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

It’s more than a celebration — it’s a chance to reflect, to learn, and to walk alongside First Nations people with respect and an open heart.

Each year, NAIDOC Week carries a new theme. In 2025, the theme is “The Next Generation” — a call to empower young voices and to honour the wisdom passed down through generations.

Why attend a local NAIDOC event?

One of the best ways to experience NAIDOC Week is by attending a community event, like the Tharawal NAIDOC Family Fun Day. These events are full of heart — and open to everyone.

You don’t need to know everything about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history to take part. Just showing up with interest and kindness is enough.

At events like these, you’ll find:

  • Family-friendly activities
  • Cultural performances and music
  • Community stalls and local services
  • Friendly faces and open conversations

And, most importantly — a space where people come together to celebrate culture, connection and community.
