NDIS Reviews Made Simple: When, Why and How to Prepare

Let’s be honest—hearing the words “NDIS plan review” can feel a little overwhelming. You might wonder: When is it happening? What do I need to do? Will I still get the support I need?

If you’re feeling unsure, you’re not alone. The good news? NDIS reviews don’t have to be scary or confusing. In fact, with a bit of preparation and the right support, they can be an empowering chance to reflect on your progress, adjust your supports, and make sure your plan is still working for you.

Let’s walk through the when, why, and how—together.

💡 What Is an NDIS Review?

An NDIS review is a check-in to see how your current plan is going. It’s an opportunity to talk about what’s working, what’s not, and what’s changed in your life since your last plan started.

There are a few different types of reviews (more on that soon!), but the main goal is simple: to make sure your NDIS plan still fits your needs, goals, and life.

📅 When Do NDIS Reviews Happen?

Here’s a quick breakdown:

  • Scheduled Plan Reviews: These usually happen at the end of your current plan—often every 12 or 24 months.

  • Change of Circumstances Reviews: If something big changes in your life—like your living situation, health, or support needs—you can request a review at any time.

  • Unscheduled Reviews: These are also called “Participant-Requested Reviews” and can be used if you feel your current plan isn’t meeting your needs.

🤔 Why Do Reviews Matter?

Because you matter. Your life isn’t static—things change, goals evolve, and sometimes the support you needed a year ago just doesn’t cut it anymore.

A review is your moment to:

  • Advocate for more (or different) support
  • Celebrate progress you’ve made
  • Update your goals
  • Make your plan work better for you

Think of it as a refresh, not a test.

✅ How to Prepare (Without the Panic)

Here’s a simple checklist to help you feel ready:

1. Reflect on What’s Working (and What’s Not)

  • Which supports have made a difference?
  • Are there any services you’re not using?
  • Have your needs or goals changed?

Take some time to jot these down—or talk it through with someone you trust.

2. Gather Evidence

This might sound formal, but it just means collecting things like:

  • Progress notes from therapists
  • Support worker reports
  • Letters from your GP or specialists
  • Photos or journal entries showing how you’ve grown or what’s been challenging

Evidence helps show why certain supports are helpful or why something new might be needed.

3. Review Your Goals

Have you kicked a goal recently? Amazing! Want to set new ones? Go for it! Your goals guide your plan—so they should reflect your current priorities and dreams.

4. Bring in Support

You don’t have to do this alone. Your support coordinator, LAC, or even a trusted support worker can help you:

  • Prepare documents
  • Attend the review meeting
  • Communicate your needs clearly
